A Pinterest Wedding
And the Thing about Styled Shoots
There are these questions who split the opinions of vendors in (swiss) wedding industry. One of them who seems to never go out of fashion is the one concerning styled shoots: It’s when wedding vendors get together to create a stunning inspiration shoot how a real wedding could look like. The issue about is that actually not every vendor thinks it is such a good idea because you set up quite high standards for bridal couples to be. So to settle one thing just right away: I totally appreciate high standards why it’s my belief that styled shoots actually are an opportunity to establish an international renowned wedding industry. Please note: I am talking as a floral designer and event stylist. Not as a photographer. Not as wedding planner. It’s not my place to say what it does to the industry of wedding photographers if numerous features on wedding blogs are styled shoots, not real weddings.
But back to the question why styled shoots are controversial: Mostly because some vendors may say that styled shoots set unrealistic expectations, that they are a «correction made», no more authentic and led people to want things and for couples that work with limited resources this sense of wanting things can be very challenging. Also vendors may say that styled shoots evoke the expectation that nothing but styled wedding will do and they overshadow real weddings with low budgets.
And I get it: Pinterest can be quite challenging if I have to explain to a bride that peonies and anemones are flowers from a different season and it is just way too expensive and honestly not ecologically to have peonies in winter. Not to mention the quality would be terrible. And yes: styled shoots are a lot of work and for floral designers they always cost money, lot of money actually. But: concerning the floral design and event styling there actually do not have to be a difference between a styled shoot and a real wedding. In fact, with every season I work as a floral designer for weddings I get more bridal couples who do not only need a flower arrangement for the table but trusting me with event styling issues. And all these details who matter that much for a styled shoot are part of the consultation I am having with my bridal couples: I am asking the bride how her gown looks like, what make up she will get and what she has in mind for her hairs. I always look up the location the couple has chosen because it influences that much which floral design will fit. And I am also spending hours finding the right palette of colors and flowers for the couple of a real wedding. So a styled shoot is actually the perfect tool to improve our strengths and our creativity. And of course it is also the place where you can play with new ideas which for an artist is very important. So styled shoots are not only a increase of our skills who will make a bridal couple even more satisfied, but mostly – I repeat: I am talking as a floral designer – they show how a real wedding really CAN – not could! – look like. So hell yes: Pinterest boards can come to life. And I am more than pleased to do so. Let’s set our standards high because our couples deserve every beauty in this world we can offer them. They deserve every second we put in finding the perfect palette, the perfect flowers and styling who fits their location, their dress, their hair and make up.
So when I posted the wedding styling I show you today on our blog on Facebook and I got several messages asking me with whom I did this styled shoot, I was a little bit flattered to answer that this was actually a REAL wedding. So this is to all my couples this year: Thank you for letting us help you that you and your guests will have a Pinterest Wedding.
